The House of Representatives has urged the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to instruct Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in Nigeria to immediately block all websites hosting obscene and pornographic content.

Additionally, the House called on the NCC to enforce the Nigerian Communications Act and the National Information Technology Development Act against any non-compliant ISPs.

These resolutions were passed following the adoption of a motion titled “Need to Block Internet Websites Hosting Pornographic Content and Sanction Defaulting Internet Service Providers (ISPs),” sponsored by Mr. Dalhatu Shehu Tafoki.

During the debate, Mr. Tafoki highlighted that cyber pornography is a growing global issue, and Nigeria has yet to take significant steps to address it. He emphasized that Nigeria, as a deeply religious nation, upholds values that prohibit nudity and obscenity, as reflected in the teachings of its major religions.

The motion also pointed out that several countries across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East have already implemented laws banning pornography.

It further referenced warnings from psychologists and sociologists worldwide about the psychological, social, and mental health risks associated with consuming pornographic content.

The motion expressed deep concern over the immediate negative effects of viewing such material, including:
– Deception in marriage, potentially harming family life;
– Promotion of adultery, prostitution, and unrealistic expectations leading to dangerous promiscuous behavior;
– Addiction, desensitization, and changes in attitudes toward oneself and family members.

Following the adoption of the motion, the House directed the Committees on Communications and Legislative Compliance to oversee its implementation and report back within four weeks for further legislative action.
