LASU Workers Suspend Strike, Resume Work Wednesday After Partial Agreement with Govt
Academic and non-academic staff of Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, will return to work on Wednesday, August 13, following the suspension of their industrial action which began on July 31.
The decision was reached on Monday during a congress by the Joint Action Committee (JAC), comprising ASUU, NASU, SSANU, and NAAT. The strike had paralyzed academic and administrative activities, forcing the university to postpone its second-semester examinations initially scheduled for August 4.
Last Thursday, JAC leaders and LASU management met with Lagos Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, where a deal was struck for the payment of 12 out of 23 months of salary arrears owed to staff. The state government agreed to cover nine months, while LASU management would pay the remaining three in instalments between August and December 2025.
However, workers initially rejected the agreement at an emergency congress last Friday, demanding full payment of the 23-month arrears in five instalments. Some staff accused JAC leaders of signing the deal without proper consultation.
LASU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, urged staff to accept the government’s offer, warning that prolonging the strike would harm students and the university’s reputation.
She highlighted previous welfare improvements, including full Christmas bonuses and cleared promotion backlogs.
Following Monday’s Senate meeting, the university announced the resumption of academic activities from Wednesday, August 13. Students have been directed to return to hostels in Ojo, Ikeja, and Epe campuses, while the postponed second-semester examinations will now begin on Monday, August 18, 2025.
A statement by LASU’s Centre for Information and Public Relations confirmed the developments, urging students to prepare adequately for the exams.
The suspension of the strike ends a two-week disruption, though some workers remain dissatisfied with the partial resolution of their demands.
