You betrayed us, NNPP accuses Governor Abba Yusuf after resignation

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has accused the Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, of betraying the people. In a statement issued on Friday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Oladipo Johnson, strongly condemned the governor’s decision to resign from the party.

Johnson warned that those who sacrifice loyalty for convenience, and integrity for deceit, seldom escape the judgment of the people.

He said Yusuf’s action could expose the state to the very forces that have historically opposed its development and the aspirations of its citizens.

The party expressed deep regret, stating that Governor Yusuf, a man entrusted by the people based on decades of loyalty to the Kwankwasiyya Movement, has now chosen to betray that sacred trust.

They argue his step risks returning Kano to forces opposed to its progress.

The NNPP challenged the governor’s rationale, noting its recent successful national convention, supervised by INEC, which Yusuf attended.

The party also highlighted its victory in two supplementary elections held just months ago, calling his claim of an “irredeemable crisis” within the party baseless and an afterthought.

Drawing a historical parallel, the statement referenced the 1980s defection of Alhaji Abubakar Rimi from the People’s Redemption Party to the Nigerian People’s Party.

Despite taking a vast majority of elected officials with him, Rimi was defeated in the subsequent gubernatorial election, and nearly all the defecting state assembly members lost their seats—a result the NNPP calls a “sobering lesson.”

The party called on its members and the people of Kano State to remain calm and avoid discord, expressing confidence that the loyalty of Kano’s citizens to principled leadership will ultimately triumph.

It urged the over one million people who voted for Yusuf, and all citizens, to remain patient and restrained, avoiding division.

The statement concluded by reiterating that history shows those who trade loyalty for expediency and honour for deceit rarely escape the judgment of the people, affirming that the truth endures and the will of the masses will prevail.
