At least 6,000 indigenes and residents of Epe and other communities in the Local Government Area of Lagos State have benefited from free eye surgeries, glasses and drugs for treatment of sight issues.

The beneficiaries, including the students, elderly, youths, expectant mothers, and other patients were treated during a two-day programme to commemorate 2024 World Sight Day with the theme: “Love Your Eyes – Kids,” held at the Local Government Secretariat, Ita-Marun, Epe, Lagos State.

The Chairman of the Council,  Ms. Surah Animashaun, said the gesture was part of her shared values towards giving hope and touching people’s lives within and outside the council local government areas.

She said the programme was targeted at providing the indigenes with treatments in specific and general health care needs, to enable them attain quality and improved living standards.

Animashaun said: “The majority of the patients who received treatments and aids from our medical team were counselled, screened and provided with free drugs and glasses to mark the year 2024 World Sight Day, which celebrated worldwide to give succour to those suffering from vision and sight related issues.

“We have interfaced with over 500 students and residents of Epe and other communities within and outside in providing recommended glasses, drugs and sunshades for those in dire needs, so as to alleviate them from spending money to buy it.

“Indeed, apart from the provisions of glasses and drugs for the students and elderly people in the council, we’ve also carried out youth empowerment and skills development schemes through trainings, scholarships and sporting activities as a veritable tool for social integration, human capacity development and others,” Animashaun said

One of the beneficiaries, 12-year-old student, was filled with joy for the gesture, praying God to bless the council Chairperson.

He said: “May God continue to bless her with wisdom and prosperity because she decided to extend the blessing God showered on her to the poor and his people in the council area and its communities.”
