World Ocean Day: Mrs Akeredolu urges women to be environmentally friendly

The wife of Ondo State Governor, Arabinrin Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, has called on women across the nation to imbibe healthy environmental practices as a way to preserving the nation’s water life.

She made this known during a programme organised by Mundus Maris to mark this year’s edition of the world ocean day which held today at Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State.

World Ocean Day is an annual event celebrated on June 8 which seeks to sensitize and encourage people around the world to work towards sustaining healthy ocean life.

While noting the sociological significance of the year’s theme, Women and Ocean, Mrs Akeredolu stated that mothers must take the lead in the fight against indiscriminate disposal of waste. She observed that inculcating such positive values on the children would help in the sustainability of the program’s objectives.

The first lady also recommended adequate sensitization on the need for ocean-friendly practices among our women while calling on Governmental and non-profit organisations to make concerted efforts towards providing necessary assistance and conducting adequate environmental survey around the nation.

Also speaking at the event were the LOC chairman, Prof.Oyedapo Fagbenro, Prof. B.T Fregene, Dr Lydia Adeleke and the Provost, College of Fisheries and Marine Technology, Lagos, Dr Abiodun Sule, who thanked Arabinrin Akeredolu for her tireless commitment to the sensitization of women in Ondo State. The speakers also encouraged the women to live up to the objectives of the programme.

Highpoint of the event also featured the presentation of an Honorary Diploma to the Wife of Ondo State Governor by the programme organisers, Mundus Maris, and merit awards to deserving participants of the programme.
