Women’s World Cup draw: Nigeria in Group B, face Australia, Canada, Ireland

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have been drawn into Group B of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup to be co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia.

The Nigerian women have been pitched in group B alongside Australia, Canada and Republic of Ireland.

Nigeria have previously played the Canadian and Australian women’s national teams at the FIFA World Cup.

The Canadians have been unable to defeat Nigeria at the World Cup, drawing 3-3 in 1995 and losing 1-0 in 2011.

Nigeria’s meeting with Australia at the FIFA World Cup in 2015 ended in a 2-0 loss.

Ireland and Nigeria have never met before, with the Girls in Green making their FIFA World Cup debut next year.

In preparation for the World Cup, Nigeria have played friendly games against the USWNT, Canadian women’s national team and Nadeshiko of Japan.

The Randy Waldrum led side qualified for the mundial by being amongst the semifinalists of the 2022 Women Africa Cup of Nations held in Morocco.

Nigeria have participated in every edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup since its inception in 1991, one of seven teams to do so.

The Super Falcons’ highest achievement at the World Cup is a quarterfinal finish, which was achieved in 1999.

Group B : Australia, Republic of Ireland, Nigeria, Canada

Group C : Spain, Costa Rica, Zambia, Japan

Group D : England, Group B Play-off winner, Denmark, China

Group E : USA, Vietnam, Netherlands, Group A Play-off winner

Group F : France, Jamaica, Brazil, Group C Play-off Winner

Group G : Sweden, South Africa, Italy, Argentina

Group H : Germany, Morocco, Colombia, Korea Republic
