Why Kano Gov’s defection to APC is delaying, by Shehu Sani

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has provided context for the apparent delay in Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s speculated shift from the NNPP to the APC, contrasting it with smoother political realignments elsewhere.

In a Facebook post, Sani described Kano’s political environment as uniquely volatile, anchored in deep-seated historical rivalries that complicate any movement.

“All the defections in the country have been seamless and easy except that of Kano,” he stated. “Kano’s politics remains as hot as that of 1979.”

He recalled the ideological battles and factional crises of the Second Republic, particularly within the old People’s Redemption Party (PRP), which he said mirrors current uncertainties.

Sani recounted the confusion when the PRP split between factions led by Aminu Kano and Michael Imoudu, and noted how the impeachment of Kaduna’s late Governor Balarabe Musa fractured progressive morale.

Drawing a parallel to the present, Sani reflected that politics often demands resilience, calling it “the art of moving from one storm to another.”

His insights emerge amid ongoing speculation about Governor Yusuf’s potential defection, following the governor’s recent private meeting with President Bola Tinubu.
