WAEC releases 2022 SSCE results

The West African Examination Council, (WAEC) has released the results of the 2022 West African Senior School Certificate Examination, (WASSCE).

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, the Nigeria Head of National Office, Mr. Patrick Areghan said a total of 1,222,505 candidates out of the total of 1, 601, O47 candidates that sat the examination representing 76.36 percent, obtained credits and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English and Mathematics.

Of this number, Mr Areghan said 597,811 representing 37.34 percent were male while 624,694 representing 39.02 percent were female candidates.

“The percentage of candidates in this category in the WASSCE for school candidates, 2021, that is, those who obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects including English Language and Mathematics, was 81.70 percent.

“Thus there is an appreciable 5.34 percent decrease in performance in this regard,” he explained.

He also explained that out of the total that sat the examination, 1, 409, 529 candidates, representing 88.04 percent have results obtained credit and above in a minimum of any five subjects with or without English Language or Mathematics.

Giving further statistics, Areghan said a total a total of 1, 607, 981 candidates registered for the examination from 20, 222 recognized secondary schools in the country.

“I also wish to report that a total of 1,713 candidates with varying degrees of special needs, registered for the examination and out of this number, 128 were visually challenged; 583 had impaired hearing; 387 were spastic cum mentally challenged and 12 were physically challenged.”

He however said out of the total that sat the examination in Nigeria, 1, 437, 629 candidates, representing 89.79 percent have their results processed and released while 163,418 candidates, representing 10.21 percent have a few of their subjects still being resolved.

The HNO also added that results of 365,564 candidates, representing 22.83 percent of the total number of candidates that sat the examination, are being withheld in connection with various reported cases of examination malpractice.

“This is 11.74 percent higher than the 10.9 percent recorded in the WASSCE for School Candidates, 2021.

He said reasons are that candidates are no longer ready to learn, preparations for examinations are poor and over reluance on the so called ‘Expo’ which is actually non- existent.

“The Council will continue to sanction all cases of examination malpractice and schools, supervisors, teachers and candidates perpetuating this evil are not helping the educational system,” he stated.

He thanked the government both at the federal and state level for the conduct of the examination for school candidates, 2022 in the country.

The HNO however said states owing the council for the 2022 examination will not have their results released.
