Vice-President Kashim Shettima is currently chairing the monthly National Economic Council (NEC) meeting at the State House in Abuja, with critical national issues such as insecurity and state policing on the agenda.

Held at the Council Chambers, the meeting includes state governors, deputy governors, and key federal officials.

Notably, Rivers State’s newly appointed Sole Administrator, Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd), is making his first appearance at the NEC since assuming office. Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, who recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), is also in attendance.

Other participating governors include Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) Chairman Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq (Kwara), Hyacinth Alia (Benue), Bassey Otu (Cross River), Monday Okpebholo (Edo), Uba Sani (Kaduna), and Alex Otti (Abia), among others. Several states are represented by their deputy governors.

The NEC, chaired by the Vice-President, comprises all 36 state governors, the Central Bank Governor, and other top officials. It convenes regularly to address economic and developmental challenges and advise the President.

Key discussion points include escalating insecurity in states like Plateau, Benue, Zamfara, and Kwara, alongside the progress of state-level consensus on establishing state police. The meeting is expected to refine security strategies and strengthen federal-state collaboration in combating insecurity, fostering economic growth, and improving governance.

At the previous NEC meeting on February 20, the Nutrition 774 Initiative—a nationwide program targeting malnutrition—was launched. Today’s deliberations are anticipated to shape critical policy directions for Nigeria’s stability and development.
