Vice Admiral Ibot-Ete Ibas Assumes Role as Sole Administrator of Rivers, Vows to Restore Peace

Vice Admiral Ibot-Ete Ibas (rtd), the newly appointed Sole Administrator of Rivers State, officially assumed office on Thursday, March 20, 2025. The former Naval Chief arrived at the Government House in Port Harcourt at noon, following a formal reception at the airport led by the Rivers State Head of Service, George Nwaeke.
Ibas was accompanied by top security officials, including the General Officer Commanding the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, the Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder, and the Commander of the 115 Special Operations Group of the Nigerian Air Force.
Also present were the Commissioner of Police, the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Director of Energy Security from the Office of the National Security Adviser.
Upon his arrival, the Sole Administrator proceeded to the State Executive Council Chambers, where he was received by Permanent Secretaries.
He immediately convened a closed-door meeting with security heads, the Commissioner of Police, the DSS Director, the Head of Service, and the Permanent Secretaries.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Ibas revealed that discussions with security heads were ongoing and indicated that he might provide further updates later in the day.
He described the situation in Rivers State as calm and pledged to work towards fully restoring normalcy in the state.
Ibas’ appointment comes two days after President Bola Tinubu named him to oversee the state’s affairs following the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The suspension was prompted by the persistent political crisis in the state. Ibas, who met with Tinubu on Wednesday, March 19, was sworn in at the State House in Abuja and will serve as Sole Administrator for six months.
