Following the passing of Pope Francis on Monday, the Vatican has entered a period of transition, with Cardinal Kevin Farrell assuming temporary leadership of the Catholic Church as Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church.

The 77-year-old Irish-American cardinal, a respected figure with extensive pastoral and administrative experience, will oversee the Vatican’s daily operations during the interregnum—the critical period between popes. His responsibilities include maintaining Church governance until the College of Cardinals convenes to elect a new pontiff.

A former Bishop of Dallas with an MBA from the University of Notre Dame, Cardinal Farrell brings both spiritual and organizational expertise to his interim role. His appointment ensures stability as the global Catholic community prepares for the upcoming conclave, which will determine the Church’s next leader.

The Vatican confirmed that Farrell will manage essential functions while observing traditional protocols governing the sede vacante period. Church observers note his deep institutional knowledge positions him well to guide the transition during this historic moment for the 1.3 billion-member faith.

The College of Cardinals is expected to announce conclave procedures in coming days, with the election process typically beginning 15-20 days after a papal vacancy.
