Update: Oyo arrests organizers, counts losses as 30 children die in holiday stampede

Indications are that the organizers of the holiday fun fair, Women In Need Of Guidance and Support Foundation, in Ibadan where 30 children died on Wednesday have been arrested.

Governor Seyi Makinde, in a personal message on X on Wednesday, confirmed that his administration has arrested the organisers of the programme and will ensure that those responsible are prosecuted.

He said, “While investigations are ongoing, the primary organisers of the event that led to this stampede have been taken into custody.

“I want to reassure our people that anyone directly or remotely involved in this disaster will be held accountable. Please remain calm as the security agencies investigate this unfortunate incident.

“Our hearts remain with the families and loved ones impacted by this tragedy. May the souls of the departed rest in peace.”

The Oyo State Government gave the indications, as more children were brought in to hospitals dead.

However, as the state government is yet to ascertain the number of children who died in the holiday stampede in Ibadan, parents of the victims are asking the authorities to release bodies of the children for burial.

Indeed, several children died during a stampede on Wednesday at a holiday funfair in Ibadan, authorities said.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, at a holiday funfair, happened at the Islamic High School in Basorun, Oyo State.
