Trump announces 25% tariff on nations doing business with Iran

US President Donald Trump has announced an immediate 25% tariff on any country conducting business with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

He declared the measure “final and conclusive” in a Monday post on his Truth Social platform.

The announcement provides no specifics on enforcement or what level of commercial activity qualifies as “doing business” with Iran.

It coincides with widespread anti-government protests in Iran that began on December 28, initially over currency devaluation before expanding into broader demonstrations against economic hardship and political conditions.

According to rights groups, hundreds of protesters have been killed and thousands injured in the government’s crackdown, with internet restrictions hindering independent verification.

Iran’s economy, already strained by US sanctions and domestic issues, faces potential further pressure from this new policy, which could exacerbate shortages and inflation for ordinary Iranians.

Trump has previously warned of “very strong options” and said the US is prepared to aid protesters if the violence continues.
