The Lagos State House of Assembly plans to begin probe of former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, over fraud and financial misappropriation allegations levelled against him.

Obasa was recently impeached by more than two-thirds of the 40-member Assembly, which levelled financial impropriety against the former Speaker.

However, the Assembly’s next steps over the investigation are hinged on Obasa’s return to the House, which will lead to an official petition sent to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission or further internal inquiries.

The Assembly’s spokesman, Olukayode Ogundipe, said the probe would commence once Obasa resumes duties.

According to him, “There are other things we’ve been hearing about, including different amounts of money being spent by him. When he’s seated with us, actions will be taken.”

He told journalists that a committee might be established to scrutinise the allegations or the Assembly’s leadership could address the issue directly.

Also, he assured that formalities and constitutional procedures would guide the investigation.

Obasa was impeached on January 13 over alleged misconduct and financial offences, allegations the former Speaker described as baseless and his ouster “unconstitutional.”

According to Obasa, “I remain the authentic Speaker until a formal procedure is followed.”

The House, in their response, warned Obasa not to heat up the polity, insisting that“the process of his removal was constitutional. The members know what we saw, and we intended to change the guard.”

The Assembly spokesman said Obasa is still considered a member of the Assembly, adding that,“Rt Hon Mudashiru Obasa is still one of us. The process to bring him in was constitutional, and the same procedure was used to remove him.”
