Tragedy! 12 die, dozens injured as two-storey school building collapses in Jos, 70 students feared trapped

Tragedy has occurred in Jos, Plateau State, as a two-storey secondary school building collapsed on Friday, killing at least 12 persons and leaving dozens of others injured.

The school, Saints Academy, is situated in Busa Buji, Jos North of the state.

The incident disrupted activities in the area as students and their teachers ran helter skelter.

The collapsed school building is said to house more than 70 pupils, who are trapped in the rubbles of the building.

Indeed, the hitherto peaceful and serene ducational environment has been chaotic as panicking and desperate parents and residents swam around the scene to provide help fetch students screaming for help in the rubbles.

The rescue operation was spearheaded by emergency workers who battle to save students trapped in the collapsed building.

At least 12 people were said to have been pulled out dead, while dozens of others who injured have been rushed to nearby hospitals.

Some of the injured in the hospitals are in urgent need of blood transfusions as the hospitals battle to treat them, with 26 of them are receiving treatment at Our Lady of Apostles Hospital.

The Bingham Hospital is said to have received seven bodies and is providing medical care for 16 injured people.

Thirty-four injured persons are being treated at the Plateau Specialist Hospital; two of them sustained spinal cord injuries.

However, rescue efforts are still ongoing at the scene which is filled with the wailing of sirens from ambulances and and despairing parents eager to find out the fate of their children.

The Joint Security Task Force Operation Safe Haven has mobilised five vans and thirty soldiers to support the rescue efforts.

Emergency workers, supported by volunteers, security personnel, and members of the Red Cross, are using excavators to rescue pupils still trapped under the rubble.

Rescue operation is underway as security agencies and rescue operators battle with excavators to rescue students and teachers buried under the rubble.
