Tinubu Recalls Confronting IBB Over Postponed Govs’ Inauguration, Hails Ex-Leader’s Role in His Political Journey

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday recounted how he once challenged former military President Ibrahim Babangida, accusing him of failing to seize a historic opportunity.
Babangida, who ruled Nigeria from 1985 to 1993, is widely known for annulling the June 12, 1993 presidential election, which many believe was won by the late businessman Moshood Abiola.
Tinubu, who was elected to the Senate in 1992 during Babangida’s regime, shared the story at a book launch honoring the former military leader.
He recalled confronting Babangida over repeated delays in inaugurating elected officials, fearing he might be jailed for his boldness.
“I told you that you had a chance to make history that day, but you failed. Why not inaugurate us? Why keep postponing it?” Tinubu recounted.
“Many thought I would end up in jail. But you eventually shook my hand after your remarks. I’ll never forget that,” he said, drawing applause from the audience.
Tinubu also praised Babangida for his contributions to nation-building and credited him for inspiring his own political career.
“Without you, people like me wouldn’t be in politics. Your push for young, brilliant minds in politics inspired some of us,” he said.
In his response, Babangida offered insight into his controversial decision to annul the June 12 election, stating that he acted in the nation’s best interest, 32 years after the historic vote.
He acknowledged that the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola won the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election.
This revelation is contained in his newly launched autobiography, “A Journey in Service,” which was unveiled in Abuja on Thursday.
