President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Justice Stella Anukam on her re-election as a Judge of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights for another six-year term.

A statement by Presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, stated that President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting qualified Nigerians in attaining international positions, emphasizing Nigeria’s strategic importance in the global arena.

Justice Anukam was re-elected at the African Union Mid-Year Coordination Meeting Executive Council held in Accra, Ghana.

Justice Anukam, a distinguished Nigerian jurist, obtained her law degree from Obafemi Awolowo University (formerly University of Ife), Osun State, in 1984, and was called to the Nigerian Bar in August 1985.

A chartered secretary and arbitrator, she has a wealth of experience as an administrator.

She was also Director of Special Programmes at the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies in Abuja and as the Director of the International and Comparative Law Department at the Federal Ministry of Justice.

President Tinubu lauded Justice Anukam for her significant contributions to the development of human rights jurisprudence in Africa.

He urged her to continue leveraging her expertise and insights in her role at the African Court.

The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, established by African states, plays a crucial role in ensuring the protection of human and people’s rights across the continent.

It works in conjunction with the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

The court comprises eleven judges nominated by member states of the African Union and elected by the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government.

Nigeria ratified the protocol establishing the court in 2004 and continues to be a proactive participant.
