Tinubu appoints Ribadu to lead team on US-Nigeria security pact

ABUJA – In a significant move to bolster the fight against insecurity, President Bola Tinubu has approved the Nigerian contingent for the US-Nigeria Joint Working Group.

The high-level team will be led by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

This decision forms a key part of the government’s strategy to deepen international collaboration in tackling the nation’s security challenges.

The move comes on the heels of the President’s declaration of a state of emergency on security, which included directives for the mass recruitment of police and military personnel.

The working group comprises the nation’s top security and diplomatic officials, ensuring a comprehensive approach. The members are: National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu (Chairman), Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Dr. Bernard M. Doro, Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Amb. Mohammed Mohammed, and Inspector General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun

Ms. Idayat Hassan of the Office of the National Security Adviser and Mr. Paul Alabi of the Nigerian Embassy in the US will serve as the secretariat.

According to a statement from the Presidency, the formation of this Joint Working Group was a key agreement reached during a recent high-level delegation visit to Washington, D.C., led by Mr. Ribadu. That trip was aimed at addressing security concerns and lobbying the US government following its designation of Nigeria as a country with particular concerns.

President Tinubu has urged the team to work diligently with their American counterparts to ensure the smooth implementation of all security agreements across various sectors.
