An accident scene with vehicle being evacuated
Three family members killed in multiple crash on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway
A fatal multi-vehicle collision on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway yesterday claimed the lives of three family members—a father, mother, and their young child—while leaving two other victims injured.
The accident, involving an Audi and two Toyota vehicles, occurred near the Secretariat approach to Otedola Bridge when a speeding, heavily loaded truck reportedly crashed into one of the cars from behind.
The impact set off a chain reaction, causing the vehicle to collide with two others.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the truck driver fled the scene immediately after the crash.
Emergency responders, including LASTMA, the Lagos State Ambulance Service, and police from the Isheri-Olowora Division, arrived promptly.
They worked together to rescue two critically injured victims trapped in the wreckage, who were then rushed to the Lagos State Emergency and Trauma Centre for urgent treatment.
The deceased family members were recovered and handed over to the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit for evacuation. The damaged vehicles were also cleared from the roadway to prevent further incidents.
LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sorrow over the “unbearable and irreplaceable loss” and extended prayers to the bereaved. He commended the coordinated response of all agencies involved while reiterating warnings against reckless speeding—particularly by trucks—which he identified as a leading cause of fatal accidents.
Bakare-Oki reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to improving traffic surveillance and enforcement to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
