ABUJA – The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commenced a scheduled restringing project on the Benin–Ajaokuta 330kV transmission line, resulting in temporary but extended power interruptions for several communities in Edo State.
In a public notice released by its Benin Region office, the TCN stated that the maintenance work at the Ihovbor Power Plant Turn-In/Turn-Out substation began on Friday, February 27, and will run daily from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. until Tuesday, March 31, 2026.
According to Ndidi Mbah, General Manager of Public Affairs, the upgrade is critical for maintaining the transmission line, which crosses major highways along the Benin–Ajaokuta corridor. Road safety agencies have been deployed to manage traffic and ensure public safety during the construction period.
As a direct result of the shutdown, the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) will be unable to supply power for up to ten hours daily to areas including the University of Benin (UNIBEN) environs, Oluku, Egba, and Ihovbor. Supply will be restored each evening at 6:00 p.m., allowing BEDC to distribute power from 6:00 p.m. until the following morning at 8:00 a.m.
The TCN apologized for the inconvenience and assured affected customers that full bulk power supply would resume immediately upon the project’s completion.
