Tanker Explosion in Delta, Scores Dead
A petrol-laden tanker lost control and burst into flames on Sunday afternoon in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, leaving several feared dead.
Viral videos showed residents fleeing as the fire engulfed the tanker, nearby buildings, and structures.
Emergency responders are expected to begin rescue operations soon.
This tragedy comes amid Nigeria’s ongoing fuel crisis, with petrol prices skyrocketing more than fivefold since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s inauguration in May 2023.
Inflation has remained high, reaching 32.7% in September, while over half of Nigerians now live below the poverty line, according to the World Bank.
In a similar incident in September, 59 people were killed in Niger State when a fuel tanker collided with a passenger truck.
