Standoff as South Korea’s Presidential Guards Block Arrest of Impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol
In a dramatic six-hour standoff on Friday, South Korea’s presidential guards and military troops prevented authorities from arresting impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, who is under investigation for insurrection linked to his December 3 martial law declaration.
The Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) and police attempted to serve an arrest warrant at Yoon’s compound in Seoul but were met by hundreds of supporters and a human blockade of over 200 Presidential Security Service (PSS) agents and soldiers.
Despite the tense situation, with altercations and visible firearms, no weapons were drawn.
The CIO ultimately withdrew, citing safety concerns, but expressed regret over Yoon’s non-compliance.
The investigation continues, with PSS officials summoned for questioning amid allegations of obstruction.
