The South African presidency has expressed regret over the expulsion of its Ambassador to the United States, Ebrahim Rasool, following an announcement by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio that Rasool was “no longer welcome.” In a statement posted on X, South Africa urged all stakeholders to maintain diplomatic decorum and reaffirmed its commitment to a strong bilateral relationship with the U.S.

The expulsion came after Rubio accused Rasool of being a “race-baiting politician” critical of former President Donald Trump. The decision followed a webinar in which Rasool discussed demographic shifts in the U.S. and the Trump administration’s policies.

This rare diplomatic action highlights escalating tensions between the two nations, fueled by disagreements over South Africa’s controversial land reform law and Trump’s claims of discrimination against the country’s white minority. South Africa has denied these allegations, stating that the land law is designed to address historical injustices stemming from the apartheid era.

The South African government emphasized its dedication to resolving disputes through dialogue and mutual respect, underscoring the importance of preserving diplomatic relations despite the current challenges.
