Soludo re-elected in landslide victory, gunshots herald celebration

AWKA – The candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has been re-elected as the Governor of Anambra State in a decisive victory, sweeping all 21 local government areas.

The Returning Officer for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Edoba Omoregie, declared Soludo the winner on Sunday at the INEC headquarters in Awka.

Soludo polled a massive 422,664 votes, dwarfing his closest rival, Nicholas Ukachukwu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who scored 99,445 votes. Sir Paul Chukwuma of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) came a distant third with 37,753 votes.

The election, which took place on Saturday, November 8, 2025, featured 16 candidates.

According to INEC, the state had 2,788,864 registered voters, with 598,229 accredited for the poll. A total of 595,298 votes were cast, of which 11,244 were rejected, leaving 584,054 valid votes.

Announcing the results, Prof. Omoregie stated, “Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, having scored 422,664 votes — the highest number of valid votes cast and having satisfied the requirements of the law — is hereby declared the winner and returned elected.” He noted that while cancellations occurred in a few areas due to incidents, the margin of lead was too significant for them to affect the outcome.

The declaration was met with jubilation, including an explosive celebration from the governor’s security detail. Shortly after the result was announced, policemen attached to Governor Soludo fired multiple gunshots into the air at his country home in Isuofia, Aguata Local Government Area.

The victory solidifies APGA’s hold on the state, with Soludo’s vote tally alone accounting for over 70% of the total valid votes cast.
