Rivers Elders Demand Apology from Wike Over Remarks Against Odili
Elders in Rivers State under the aegis of the Concerned Elders of Rivers State have demanded an unreserved apology from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for making derogatory remarks about former Governor Peter Odili, a respected elder statesman and founder of PAMO University of Medical Sciences.
In a statement signed by prominent leaders including former Governor Celestine Omehia, Prince Uche Secondus, Tele Ikuru, Austin Opara, Senator Ngoji Denton West, Dr. Abiye Sekibo, and Senator Lee Maeba, among others, the elders expressed deep dismay at Wike’s comments.
They described his behavior as unbecoming and contrary to the traditions of respect for elders and unity cherished in Rivers State.
Responding to Wike’s claim that Odili “chickened out” of the presidential race, the elders clarified that Odili stepped aside in 2006 out of loyalty to then-President Olusegun Obasanjo and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
They lauded Odili’s statesmanship and team spirit, contrasting it with Wike’s conduct.
The elders criticized Wike’s repeated disrespect toward dignitaries, including Odili, traditional rulers, and clergy, calling it an affront to Rivers State values.
They urged Wike, as a former governor and serving minister, to act with decorum and serve as a role model.
Highlighting Odili’s contributions as a medical professional, political leader, and founder of Nigeria’s first private medical university, the elders underscored his legacy and dismissed Wike’s remarks as unwarranted.
The statement concluded by reaffirming the importance of respect for elders as custodians of heritage and values, emphasizing that disrespect toward them harms the entire community.
The group called on Wike to apologize and adopt a more respectful approach in public discourse.
