Reps slash salaries to fight hunger in Nigeria

The House of Representatives has reacted to the growing economic hardship that Nigerians are going through, resolving to cut down salaries of its members by 50 percent for the next six months.
The House move is targetted at raising a least N648 million to support the Federal Government in its intervention programmes and packages.
In the same vein, the lawmakers appealed to Nigerians to exercise more patience with the President Bola Tinubu’s led administration in addressing challenges and hardships faced by the people.
They also resolved that its Committee on Appropriation, Humanitarian Affairs, Finance and Budget would ensure compliance with the resolution passed during plenary on Thursday.
The resolution was sequel to a motion by Ibrahim Isiaka, during plenary in Abuja, with the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, having explained that each lawmaker’s salary was about N600,000 monthly.
The Speaker commended members for their resolve to sacrifice part of their salaries to address hunger in the land just as some members asked the Executive to also make sacrifices in line with what the Lawmakers have done.
