President Bola Tinubu will personally attend the arrival ceremony for the remains of former President Muhammadu Buhari in Katsina on Tuesday, the Federal Government has announced.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, confirmed this during a press briefing in Abuja on Monday.

He stated that the late president’s body would be welcomed with a military honor at the airport before being taken to Daura, Buhari’s hometown, for Islamic funeral rites and burial at his residence.

Idris said, “The late President’s remains are expected to arrive in Nigeria by noon. President Tinubu will receive the body at Katsina Airport, after which it will be transported to Daura for the final burial rites.”

He further disclosed that Tinubu has approved a state burial and set up an inter-ministerial committee, led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, to oversee funeral arrangements.

The committee includes ministers of defence, interior, finance, health, and other key officials, with the Permanent Secretary of the General Services Office (GSO) serving as secretariat.

Also, 25 members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) have been directed to attend the funeral and stay in Daura for the third-day prayers on Wednesday, July 16.

In light of the burial, the special FEC meeting originally scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, has been rescheduled to Friday, July 18.

Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, confirmed the adjustment, stating that the new date would be finalized after the funeral.

Buhari passed away on Sunday in London following a prolonged illness. Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila traveled to the UK to oversee the repatriation of his remains.

President Tinubu has declared a seven-day national mourning period, beginning Sunday, July 13, with flags flown at half-mast nationwide.
