Power Minister assures nationwide electricity restoration within 48 hours after pipeline sabotage
The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has pledged that Nigeria’s recent sharp decline in electricity supply will be resolved within the next 24 to 48 hours.
This assurance follows a nationwide drop in power generation triggered by an explosion on the Escravos–Lagos Gas Pipeline (ELP) and acts of vandalism on other critical gas infrastructure.
During an emergency meeting with power sector stakeholders, including generation and distribution companies, Adelabu emphasized the urgent need to restore gas supply, especially given heightened demand during the Christmas season.
He attributed the current disruption to acute gas shortages caused by the pipeline incidents, which have severely reduced output from key thermal power plants.
The National Independent System Operator (NISO) confirmed that repair work on the affected pipeline, led by the Nigerian Gas Processing and Transportation Company (NGPTC), is nearing completion.
Full gas flow is anticipated to resume within the stated timeframe.
The Minister acknowledged the inconvenience to households and businesses, stating that the federal government is treating the situation with utmost urgency.
He has directed all relevant agencies to ensure repairs are completed on schedule.
Beyond immediate restoration, Adelabu stated that long-term measures are being accelerated to diversify the nation’s energy sources, strengthen the grid, and enhance protection for critical infrastructure using advanced surveillance.
He appealed for public patience and urged communities to report suspicious activity around energy facilities, calling infrastructure protection a shared responsibility.
The Minister reaffirmed the Tinubu administration’s commitment to delivering stable and reliable electricity across Nigeria.
