Police release detained Sowore

The police may have yielded to mounting pressures as human rights activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, has been released.

Indeed, Sowore confirmed his release on a post on his X handle on Friday.

His release would appear to be a police response to pressures mounted by human rights activists, civil society organisations and politicians, including two former presidential candidates, Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar.

Sowore, who announced his release in a post on X, said the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) acted unlawfully by arresting him.

He, however, expressed gratitude to supporters who stood by him during his two days detention.

He believed that his freedom was “nothing to celebrate” as the struggle for justice continues.

According to him, “The Nigeria Police Force and its illegal IGP have capitulated to the demands of the revolutionary movement. I have been released from unjust, unwarranted, and unlawful detention.

“However, it is nothing to celebrate, work tongues, but I can’t do without thanking you all for not giving up. You’ve all seen the power of unity #RevolutionNow.”
