Police rearrest Omoyele Sowore outside Abuja court after granted bail

In a dramatic scene outside the Kuje Magistrate Court, activist Omoyele Sowore was said to have been re-arrested by police officers just moments after being granted bail.

Despite Magistrate Abubakar Umar Sai’id approving bail for Sowore and 13 others, police allegedly attacked the activist as his legal team processed the paperwork.

Eyewitnesses report that the Investigating Police Officer (IPO), CSP Ilyasu Barau, led the operation, dragging Sowore on the ground, and forcing him into a waiting police van.

The arrest was met with resistance from Sowore, who questioned the officers’ actions.

When onlookers demanded to see a remand order authorizing the detention, the police reportedly refused to present any documentation.

Sources indicate that Sowore was taken to Kuje Prison, despite the court’s bail order, with police citing a “secret remand order.”

Sowore and the others were initially arrested during a recent #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja and arraigned on charges of unlawful assembly and disturbance of public peace.

Among those also granted bail were Aloy Ejimakor, the lawyer for IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, and Kanu’s brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu.
