Police Council confirms Tunji Disu as substantive IGP, set to send name to Senate

The National Police Council has confirmed Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police, paving the way for his name to be forwarded to the Senate for screening.

President Bola Tinubu initially appointed Disu as acting IGP on February 25, 2026, following the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun. In a statement at the time, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga indicated that the President would convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive IGP before transmitting his name to the Senate for confirmation.

The 59-year-old assumed office as acting IGP last Wednesday during a brief ceremony at the Louis Edet House in Abuja, where President Tinubu decorated him with his new rank.

Prior to his appointment, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos.

He was promoted to the rank of AIG last year. His previous roles include Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and later Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja, where he was deployed by former IGP Egbetokun.

A member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Disu previously headed the Intelligence Response Team of the Nigeria Police Force, a position once held by Abba Kyari.

Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos Island, Disu enlisted in the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992. Throughout his career, he has served as Divisional Police Officer in Ago Iwoye (Ogun State), Ikare and Owo (Ondo State), as well as Elimbu and Elelenwo in Rivers State.

He also served as Officer in Charge of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad and anti-kidnapping operations in Rivers State, and commanded SARS in Ondo, Oyo, and Rivers States.

Additionally, he served as second in command of the State Criminal Investigations Department in Rivers State.

During his handover speech, the former head of the Lagos Rapid Response Squad pledged to deliver accountable, modern, and professional policing.

“My tenure will be built on three clear commitments: professionalism, modernism, and accountability,” Disu told the gathering of top officers and family members.
