Police bolster security in Kebbi communities after Lakurawa bandits kill 33
The Kebbi State Police Command has deployed additional personnel and operational assets to communities in Arewa Local Government Area following a deadly attack by suspected Lakurawa bandits that left 33 residents dead.
In a statement released on Friday, the command’s spokesman, Bashir Usman, disclosed that the violent incident occurred on Wednesday when heavily armed men, believed to be Lakurawa bandits, invaded the district, reportedly with the intent to rustle cattle.
Preliminary investigations suggest the assailants crossed into Kebbi from Gudu Local Government Area in Sokoto State.
“During the attack, residents of Mamunu, Awasaka, Tungan Tsoho, Makangara, Kanzo, Gorun Naidal, and Dan Mai Ago mobilised in response to the invasion. In the ensuing confrontation, 33 people lost their lives,” Usman said.
He noted that the police, in collaboration with the military and other security agencies, have reinforced security in the affected communities and are conducting sustained area domination patrols to restore normalcy and prevent further attacks.
The command extended condolences to the families of the victims and the entire Arewa community. Usman urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements through established security channels, while cautioning against directly engaging armed criminals due to the grave risks involved.
“Targeted operations are ongoing to track down and apprehend the perpetrators, as well as to strengthen early warning mechanisms in vulnerable communities across the state,” he added.
