PDP to appeal Ibadan court ruling, calls judgment “academic”

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, has characterized a recent Federal High Court ruling in Ibadan as “academic,” asserting it does not impact the outcome of the party’s Ibadan Convention.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Turaki announced the party’s decision to swiftly appeal the judgment.

The court had declined to grant an order compelling the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize the convention.

Turaki criticized the ruling, stating the judge granted reliefs that were neither requested nor argued by any party.

He confirmed the PDP has filed a Notice of Appeal and a Motion for Stay of Execution, vowing to pursue the matter diligently.

Turaki emphasized that the judgment conflicts with existing court orders and previous rulings from courts of coordinate jurisdiction.

The convention produced the Turaki-led National Working Committee, which the party maintains remains “legally intact, firmly in place, and fully committed” to the party’s ongoing renewal.

Turaki urged members and supporters to remain calm and resolute, stating there is no cause for alarm and that the party’s rebirth movement is “steadily on course.”

He framed the judgment as part of the broader political struggle ahead of the 2027 general elections, noting the party is working to resolve internal disputes and present a united front.

Turaki concluded by affirming the PDP’s commitment to pursuing the matter to its lawful conclusion.
