PDP braces for defections as chieftains near move to ADC

A new report indicates that several chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are finalizing plans to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Multiple sources confirm that negotiations with the ADC leadership are at an advanced stage, with formal announcements expected soon.

The planned defections involve prominent stakeholders from various states who have grown dissatisfied with the PDP.

A senior PDP figure involved in the discussions stated that many see the ADC as “a more stable and ideologically coherent platform” for their political ambitions.

“There is growing frustration. Many leaders feel the PDP has not shown the capacity to resolve its internal crises,” the source added.

The development comes as a PDP faction led by former Minister Kabiru Turaki met behind closed doors with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja on Tuesday.

The details of that meeting remain unclear, and its connection to the defection plans is unconfirmed.

The Turaki-led faction is aligned with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, while a rival faction is loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

Meanwhile, the ADC has actively sought to present itself as a credible alternative, holding a series of private meetings with disaffected politicians from other parties.

ADC officials say the party is working to strengthen its national structure ahead of future elections.

An ADC national officer confirmed talks with PDP members but emphasized that the party would only admit defectors who share its principles.

“We are open to partnerships, but we are also committed to discipline and internal democracy,” the official stated.

In response, PDP leadership downplayed the threat of mass defections, maintaining that the party remains strong and is taking steps to address internal grievances.

A party source expressed confidence in the PDP’s ability to overcome its challenges and urged members to stay loyal.
