Oyo PDP hails court order okaying national convention, says it’s “victory for democracy”
The Oyo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has celebrated a High Court ruling that permits the party to proceed with its planned elective national convention in Ibadan.
In a landmark judgment, Justice A. L. Akintola ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to monitor the proceedings and allowed the party’s National Convention Organising Committee to continue its preparations without any obstruction.
Reacting to the decision, the Oyo State PDP Chairman, Mr. Dayo Ogunbenro, described the judgment as a “victory for democracy” and a relief for party members nationwide.
He expressed confidence that the convention would proceed as scheduled and stated that the party has internal mechanisms to reconcile any differences that may arise.
Echoing this sentiment, the State Publicity Secretary, Mr. Michael Ogunshina, expressed great pleasure with the court’s decision, which he said has restored confidence among members.
He clarified that the ruling was based on an ex parte motion filed by an aspirant and that the substantive case is scheduled for a hearing on November 10th.
However, the current order allows the party to move forward with its preparations.
Both officials used the opportunity to position the PDP for the 2027 general elections.
They asserted that the party remains Nigeria’s most vibrant opposition and claimed that Nigerians are dissatisfied with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and are yearning for the PDP’s return.
With the court’s clearance, the Oyo State PDP reaffirmed its readiness to host thousands of delegates for what it promises will be a “historic and unifying” national convention in Ibadan.
