Our Visa Policy Misunderstood, U.S. Mission Clarifies

The U.S. Mission in Nigeria has clarified that recent reductions in the validity of most non-immigrant visas for Nigerians were not influenced by Nigeria’s stance on third-country deportees, its e-visa policies, or its affiliations with groups like BRICS.
In a statement on its official X account, the Mission explained that the adjustment is part of a global review aimed at ensuring the security and integrity of U.S. immigration systems. The review assesses visa usage worldwide based on technical and security benchmarks.
The U.S. Mission emphasized its commitment to maintaining strong ties with Nigeria, stating: “We value our longstanding partnership and remain dedicated to working with Nigerian officials and citizens to meet these standards, promoting safe and lawful travel between both nations.”
The statement sought to dispel public misconceptions, reaffirming that the policy change was not a reaction to Nigeria’s internal or foreign policies but rather a routine security measure applied across multiple countries.
