Opposition parties, including the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), have criticized President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima for their repeated international travels, calling them wasteful and insensitive to Nigeria’s economic challenges.

The backlash follows Tinubu’s departure on Wednesday for a two-week “working leave” in France, while Shettima traveled to Senegal a day later for the country’s Independence Day celebrations.

CUPP National Secretary Peter Ahmeh warned that the absence of both leaders creates a governance vacuum, impacting security and the economy. “When one leader is away, the other should stay. But with both gone, critical decisions are delayed, leaving the country vulnerable,” he said.

Ahmeh also questioned Tinubu’s frequent visits to France, asking, “Has France become Nigeria’s second home?”

PDP Deputy National Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor accused the leaders of prioritizing personal interests over national duties. “Many of these trips could be handled by ambassadors or ministers. The President’s constant absence raises suspicions—is it about governance or health?” he said, demanding transparency about Tinubu’s well-being.

NNPP spokesman Ladipo Johnson criticized the administration for leaving Nigeria on “autopilot” amid economic hardship. “At a time when citizens are suffering, these lavish trips send a message of neglect,” he said, urging Tinubu to refocus on domestic issues.

However, a government official, speaking anonymously, defended the trips as “legitimate,” stating that modern governance does not require physical presence at all times. “Previous administrations also had leaders travel simultaneously without halting governance,” the official argued.

The Presidency has yet to issue an official response to the opposition’s claims.
