OpenAI acquires Multi to expand ChatGPT’s capabilities
The multiplayer desktop collaboration application Multi has been acquired by OpenAI.
Consequently, its current service will be discontinued next month, acvording to the company in a blog post on Monday.
Multi’s acquisition follows closely after the acquisition of a database tech firm, Rockset.
Multi (previously Remotion), prides itself as a startup developing an enterprise-focused, video-first collaboration platform.
Embiricos, a former product manager at Dropbox, and Charley Ho, a former software developer at Google, co-founded Multi to create a Zoom-based platform that enables distant teams to collaborate via video chats.
A post on social media stated that several features are available, including the capacity to work together on screen sharing with up to ten users concurrently, editable shortcuts, and deep links for code, drawings, and documents that are automatically generated.
“We’re beyond excited to share that Multi is joining OpenAI,” a post on Multi’s blog stated.
It continued: “Thank you to everybody who used Multi. It was a privilege building with you, and we learned a ton from you.”
This is heartbreaking news for current consumers in this statement as Multi will be sunsetting next month.
“Unfortunately, this means we’re sunsetting Multi. We’ve closed new team signups, and currently, active teams will be able to use the app until July 24, 2024, after which we’ll delete all user data. If you need help or more time finding a replacement, email alexander@multi.app,” the company stated.
To date, the company has raised $13 million from investors, such as First Round and Greylock Partners.
Similar to the purchase of Rockset, the Multi agreement appears to be part of OpenAI’s larger recent strategy of making significant investments in enterprise solutions.
Earlier report stated that OpenAI is reportedly considering transitioning from its current capped-profit structure to a full for-profit model.
