Okada ban: Abia Govt caution security agencies against extorting innocent residents

Abia State government has warned security officials against extorting citizens and other residents in their attempt to enforce ban on commercial motorcycle operations in the state.

Only recently, the state government had banned operation of commercial motorcycles in Umuahia and Aba metropolis.

The state government clarified that it only re-enforced the ban on Okada movements in the Umuahia and Aba metropolis as earlier announced by the previous administration in the state.

The Commissioner for information and Culture, Okey Kanu, disclosed this to journalists at a press briefing on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting.

Kanu advised security agencies to be cautious and professional in carrying out the enforcement.

He noted that the move was aimed at safeguarding the lives of the people and not to punish residents.

He further announced that the Single Treasure Account, TSA, launched by Governor Alex Otti would kick off on September 1, 2023.

Kanu said there was no going back on the TSA policy, stressing its commencement would breeze-in transparency and due process.

“It is one of the cardinal aspects of this administration in terms of due process and transparency. So come September 1st, the Single Treasury Account will commence and all government payments would be made to pass the single platform,” he said.
