Ohanaeze Ndigbo Demands Immediate Impeachment of Fubara as Rivers Governor, Hails Supreme Court Ruling

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has urged the Rivers State House of Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminialayi Fubara without delay. This call follows a Supreme Court ruling that halted financial allocations to the Rivers State Government, a decision Ohanaeze described as a victory for the people and a stand against executive misconduct.
In a statement issued on February 28, 2025, the group, represented by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Deputy President General, and Chief Chinenyeze Thompson Ohia, National Public Secretary, praised the court’s verdict. The ruling, delivered by Justice Emmanuel Akomaye Agim and a five-member panel led by Justice Musa Uwani Aba-Aji, declared Fubara’s actions illegal and ordered the reinstatement of 27 lawmakers barred from performing their duties.
Ohanaeze accused Fubara of multiple impeachable offenses, including the demolition of the Rivers State House of Assembly complex, which obstructed the lawmakers’ functions. The group also criticized the governor for attempting to govern with only four legislators, undermining democracy, and exploiting presidential immunity to engage in unconstitutional practices.
The organization called on the Rivers State Assembly, led by Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, to act swiftly by establishing a disciplinary committee under the Chief Judge of Rivers State to restore democratic order. “The time for decisive action is now. The integrity of our democracy depends on it,” the statement emphasized.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo hailed the Supreme Court’s judgment as a decisive step toward ending the unconstitutional actions that have characterized Fubara’s administration, urging immediate action to uphold democratic principles.
