Obasa returns as Speaker, Meranda remains Deputy ending Lagos Assembly leadership crisis

Rt Hon. Mudashiru Obasa has been returned as Speaker of the Lagos State House Assembly on Monday March 3, 2025.

In a move that appeared to have followed all due process, the House leadership, including the Majority Leader, Chief Whip, Deputy Speaker and the new Speaker, Mojisola Meranda all resigned their positions and were quickly returned to the former positions.

This process paved way for the reinstatement of Obasa as Speaker.

And in a short speach, Obasa thanked his colleagues, describing what happened as a demonstration that the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the House have an effective mechanism to resolve issues.

He also thanked Chief Bisi Akande and Chief Olusegun Osoba, former governprs of Osun and Ogun states respectively, for their roles in the resolution of the political crisis.

During the short plenary, Obasa adjourned the House sine die. Meranda, the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House Assembly, was in office for 49 days.

Earlier, the state Attorney General, Mr Lawal Pedro, and the Lagos State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Cornelius Ojelabi, were in the emergency meeting with key stakeholders to address the ongoing leadership issues in the state.

In attendance at the meeting are former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, incumbent Speaker Mojisola Lasbat, and two lawmakers, Mustainu Tobun and Gbolahan Yishawu.

The meeting is reportedly aimed at resolving the leadership crisis that has been rocking the state. Meanwhile, other lawmakers are gathered in the garden, discussing the issue.
