The League of Northern Democrats (LND), led by former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau, has announced its decision to back a national opposition coalition aiming to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

The group, comprising prominent political figures, academics, and business leaders from Northern Nigeria, made the declaration in a communiqué released after its meeting on Thursday. The statement was presented by one of its conveners, Umar Ardo.

Additionally, the LND resolved to engage with the 19 Northern governors over the worsening security and economic conditions in the region.

The LND endorsed its constitution and previous meeting minutes while directing its legal adviser to finalize the group’s registration as a formal association.

The league agreed to support the National Opposition Coalition, led by former Senate President David Mark, in shaping the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.

The group plans to explore forming a new political party to attract disaffected members from larger parties, while also considering merging with an existing party as a fallback option.

The LND vowed to mobilize Northern Nigerians to demand accountability from the National Assembly, particularly in enforcing constitutional provisions against lawmakers who defect from their original parties (citing recent cases in Delta and Kebbi states).

The league criticized the Northern governors for their perceived inaction on critical issues such as poverty, insecurity, unemployment, and economic decline, pledging to pressure them for improved governance.

Ardo emphasized that while forming a new party is the preferred choice, merging with an existing one remains a viable alternative.

The LND’s resolutions highlight its commitment to political restructuring and addressing the region’s pressing challenges ahead of the next general elections.
