NLC Urges FG to Withdraw Controversial Tax Bills
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has reiterated its demand for the Federal Government to withdraw the contentious tax bills currently before the National Assembly.
In a New Year message titled “In 2025, Hope is in Our Collective Resolve,” NLC President Joe Ajaero emphasized the need for transparency, inclusivity, and honesty in governance, while advocating for a collaborative approach to national development.
Ajaero warned that the proposed tax bills, if passed, would worsen the economic hardship faced by Nigerian workers. He urged the government to work with stakeholders to draft a new national tax law that enjoys wider acceptance and fosters economic growth.
“As we step into 2025, the Nigeria Labour Congress extends warm New Year greetings to every worker and citizen across our great nation,” the statement read. “The challenges we face must not hold us down but inspire a collective resolve to drive Nigeria out of underdevelopment.”
The NLC stressed that governance must translate into tangible benefits for citizens, including improved access to food, healthcare, education, and security. Ajaero also called for an end to the use of violence against workers and unions, warning that such actions breed industrial unrest.
The NLC urged the government to respect the provisions of the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act and engage in wage reviews to reflect current economic realities. “A productive nation begins with workers whose incomes meet their basic needs,” Ajaero stated.
As the NLC prepares for a national dialogue in Ibadan this January, it reaffirmed its commitment to fostering policies that prioritize workers’ welfare and national progress.
The message concluded with a call for unity in transforming Nigeria into a nation of inclusion, stability, and shared prosperity.
