NIPSS seeks Reps’ support to amend Act

The National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) has sought the support of House of Representatives to amend the law that established it.

The institute’s Director-General, Prof. Ayo Omotayo, led the delegation to the Speaker of the House of Reps, Femi Gbajabiamila in Abuja on Thursday to forward the request

Omotayo said that there was the need to improve funding of the institute as well as request for adequate attention to it deserved

He said that NIPSS was supposed to provide training to policy makers and conduct researches in varies field of development but was incapacitated due to some challenges.

“I will be deceiving myself to say that all is well with NIPSS, though we are doing all our best to execute the mandate for which it was set up,’’ D-G said.

He, however, said in spite of the numerous contribution of the institute to the national development for decades NIPSS could not retained best resource persons due to poor remuneration.

“You need to help us do more in term of what we get, the funding is too poor, we believe when we seek help, we will get it,’’ he said.

Responding, Gbajabiamila, commended NIPSS for its long service to the nation saying that there was the need for amendment to NIPSS Act

“Many of us will want to attend NIPSS because of what you have done and it is not an institution that anybody will want it to die, there is need for collaboration between NIPSS and NASS,’’ the Speaker said.

According to him, research is key to development in any sector, therefore requested the institution to the draft amendment for onward action.

He, therefore, pledged his support to fast track the process.
