Nine people were rescued alive, while three others remained trapped after an uncompleted two-storey building collapsed in the Ota-Ona area of Ikorodu, Lagos State, yesterday.

The incident occurred around 2:00 p.m., with no immediate deaths reported, though the body of a young boy was later recovered from the rubble.

A Facebook user, Rasheed Fatuga, first raised the alarm, stating that the building—located opposite the former Bugon Filling Station (now Mobil Filling Station)—had collapsed, leaving several people trapped.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement by its Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu. He said nine adult males were rescued and treated by LASEMA’s emergency medical team.

“Following distress calls received at about 2:02 p.m., LASEMA activated emergency response protocols, dispatching teams from Agbowa and Alausa to the scene,” he said.

“Upon arrival by 2:40 p.m., responders found that the under-construction building had collapsed, with three victims still trapped under the debris.”

Oke-Osanyintolu noted that the cause of the collapse remains undetermined, but rescue operations are ongoing.
LASEMA’s Tiger and Lion Response Teams swiftly cordoned off the area and deployed an excavator to assist in the search efforts.

When reached for comment, an official from the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) declined to speak, citing the absence of a substantive general manager.

Emergency personnel continue to work at the site, combing through the wreckage for possible survivors.

Investigations into the cause of the collapse are still underway.
