NiMet forecasts dust haze, thunderstorms across Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast a mix of dust haze, sunny conditions, and isolated thunderstorms across Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday, warning of reduced visibility and health risks.
In a weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet highlighted concerns for health, travel, and aviation due to suspended dust particles and intermittent rainfall across the northern, central, and southern regions.
On Monday, moderate dust haze is expected over parts of Kebbi and Kano States in the north, with visibility of 2km to 5km. The rest of the northern region will experience sunny and hazy skies. In the central region, moderate dust haze is anticipated over parts of the Federal Capital Territory and Niger states, with other states seeing sunny and hazy conditions.
The southern region will have sunny skies with patches of cloud and prospects of afternoon or evening thunderstorms with light rains over parts of Bayelsa, Lagos, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States.
On Tuesday, a slight dust haze is forecast over parts of Kano and Kebbi States in the north, with sunny and hazy conditions elsewhere.
The central region will see sunny and hazy skies, with isolated thundery activity possible over parts of Plateau State.
In the south, sunny skies with patches of cloud and prospects of thunderstorms with light rains are expected over parts of Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Lagos, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States.
For Wednesday, NiMet forecasts sunny and hazy skies over the northern and central regions throughout the day.
The southern region will have sunny skies with patches of cloud and prospects of afternoon or evening thunderstorms with light rains over parts of Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Lagos, Delta, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States.
NiMet cautioned that dust particles will be in suspension and advised the public, especially those with asthmatic or respiratory conditions, to take necessary precautions.
Motorists are urged to drive with caution, and airline operators are advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for effective operational planning.
The agency encouraged residents to stay updated on weather conditions through NiMet’s website, www.nimet.gov.ng, and official weather updates.
