Nigeria, Saudi Arabia sign MoU on military cooperation
Nigeria and Saudi Arabia solidified their defense partnership on Tuesday by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance military cooperation between the two nations.
The agreement was formalized by Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, and Saudi Arabia’s Assistant Minister of Defence for Executive Affairs, Dr. Khaled Al-Biyari, during a ceremony in Abuja.
Matawalle hailed the agreement as “a significant milestone” that will strengthen Nigeria’s defence framework and build the capacity of its armed forces. The MoU will remain in effect for an initial five-year term and focuses on several key areas of collaboration, including:
· Military training
· Joint exercises
· Intelligence sharing
· Technical assistance
· Logistics support
The minister explained that the partnership is designed to deliver concrete benefits for Nigeria, such as improved military education, greater operational readiness, and stronger counter-terrorism cooperation. The agreement includes provisions for review and renewal after five years and allows for termination by either party with three months’ diplomatic notice.
