Nigeria: Power collapses nationwide, now restored
Nigeria’s power grid collapsed again and was restored nationwide eventuality.
Nigerian distributors say the country suffered a total grid collapse on Thursday with much of the country remaining in blackout.
However, electricity has now been restored with Eko Electricity Distribution Company (Eko Electric), confirming that power supply has been restored from the grid.
Eko DisCo said, “Dear Valued Customer,” the company wrote on its X account, “kindly be informed that power supply has been restored from the grid. Thank you for your patience.”
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), which earlier confirmed the collapse of the national grid, had assured that efforts are in top gear to fix the problem.
“The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, hereby notes that grid restoration nationwide is in progress and has reached advanced stages with power supply now available in the West, North Central, South, ensuring its stability,” the agency’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah said.
According to the TCN, the collapse “occurred after a fire incident on Kanji/Jebba 330kV line 2,” adding that the matter “is being investigated, with the view to forestalling future occurrence and invariably further strengthening the grid.
“The incident notwithstanding, TCN is determined to continue to do its best to ensure grid stability,” the TCN assured.
Some electricity distribution companies earlier confirmed the collapse of the grid.
In a notice issued on its X account (formerly Twitter) this morning by its Head of Corporate Communications, Emeka Ezeh, the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Plc said it is on standby awaiting detailed information on the collapse and restoration of supply from the National Control Centre (NCC), Osogbo.
“The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) wishes to inform her esteemed customers of a total system collapse which occurred at 12:40 am today, 14th September,2023. This has resulted in the loss of supply currently being experienced across the network.
“Due to this development, all our interface TCN stations are out of supply, and we are unable to provide service to our customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo States.
“We are on standby awaiting detailed information of the collapse and restoration of supply from the National Control Centre (NCC), Osogbo,” the statement read.
The Eko Electricity Distribution Company also sent out a similar notice to its customers on its X account formerly Twitter, confirming the total grid collapse.
The company also said it is in constant communication with the National Control Centre (NCC), Osogbo and will update the customers as they get more information.
It is the first notable power grid collapse since the last one happened around September 2022.
The TCN had last month disclosed that the power grid has maintained uninterrupted stability for over 400 days.
