Nigeria defeat Egypt 4-2 on penalties to clinch AFCON 3rd place

Egypt’s Pharaohs fell to Nigeria’s Super Eagles’ defeat of 4-2 on penalties.

The win earned the Super Eagles a third place bronze medal in the Africa Cup of Nations final.

The game, played in Casablanca, saw the first half dominated by Egypt, but it was their opponents who went the closest to taking the lead.

Nigeria’s Paul Onuachu had his goal overturned by VAR on 36 minutes in what was the best chance of the opening 45 minutes.

In the second half, Egypt continued to enjoy more of the ball, but Nigeria did well to defend as a unit and limited their opponents to just one shot on target.

Nothing would separate the two sides come the full-time whistle, with the medal to be decided via a penalty shootout.

Egypt’s first two spot kicks, taken by Mohamed Salah and Marmoush, were saved by Stanley Nwabali before Nigeria saw out the shootout to win 4-2.
