NFF Congratulates Philip Shaibu on NIS Appointment
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has extended its congratulations to Comrade Philip Shaibu, former Edo State Deputy Governor, following his appointment as the new Director General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS). The announcement comes as the finalists for this year’s President Federation Cup in both the men’s and women’s categories were confirmed.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved Shaibu’s appointment to lead the nation’s premier sports training and research institution, taking over from Professor Olawale Moronkola.
In a statement released by its Communications Department, the NFF praised Shaibu as a dynamic and passionate leader with a strong track record in sports development.
NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau (MON) stated, “The NFF warmly congratulates His Excellency Philip Shaibu on this well-deserved appointment. We are confident that his expertise, dedication to sports science, and visionary leadership will bring transformative progress to the NIS.”
A former student union leader, Shaibu has been widely recognized for his contributions to grassroots sports during his tenure as Edo State’s Deputy Governor. His innovative policies and initiatives are credited with leaving a lasting legacy in the state’s sports sector.
Established in 1974, the NIS plays a pivotal role in training elite coaches, sports scientists, and administrators while advancing research to boost Nigeria’s competitiveness in global sports.
Meanwhile, the President Federation Cup has reached its climax, with the finalists confirmed after thrilling semi-final clashes on Saturday.
In the women’s category, nine-time champions Rivers Angels secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Ibom Angels in Aba, while Nasarawa Amazons dominated Edo Queens with a 2-0 win in Ayingba. The final will feature a high-stakes showdown between two of the tournament’s most successful teams.
On the men’s side, Abakaliki FC of Ebonyi advanced after a tense penalty shootout (5-4) against Ikorodu City following a goalless draw. Kwara United earned their place in the final with a hard-fought 1-0 triumph over Rangers International of Enugu.
The Women’s Final will see Rivers Angels face Nasarawa Amazons, while Abakaliki FC and Kwara United will battle for glory in the Men’s Final.
